Cake, the electric motorcycle brand which has just closed a US$ 14 million funding round, is partnering with fellow Swedish start-up Trifilon, a developer of biocomposites based on flax and hemp.

The two companies are working to replace current plastic parts on Cake motorbikes with Trifolon’s BioLite composites.

“This is a great match because our companies are both about performance and sustainability,” said Trifilon’s CEO and co-founder Martin Lidstrand. “I think fans of Cake motorbikes will respond positively to some ingredients in their motorbikes coming from European farms.”

The technology behind Trifilon’s biocomposites was initially intended for the automotive segment, as a substitute for carbon fibre. Trifilon had previously developed and built the body of a car for Volkswagen Rally with its hemp based BioLite.

Cake’s mission is to contribute to speeding up the transition towards a zero emissions society by combining excitement and responsibility and it has been making waves throughout the industry since its launch in January 2018. It is currently producing and shipping the Kalk OR and Kalk&Bikes, both of which were developed from scratch to be ultra-light weight with unprecedented reliability and durability and offering industry-leading performance.

“It is inevitable that there will be a major paradigm shift in transportation,” said Staffan Helgesson, general partner at Creandum Advisor, which led Cake’s recent funding round. “The electrification of vehicles is a big part of this, and we see consumer adoption accelerating rapidly. The combination of award-winning Scandinavian design, product innovation and a stellar entrepreneur makes Cake a great addition to our portfolio.”

Creandum Advisor is a leading European early-stage venture capital firm backing some of Europe’s most successful tech companies including Spotify, iZettle, depop, and Klarna.
