All-composite trimaran features Gurit prepreg material

Latitude Yachts, a leading builder of high quality vessels, luxury yachts, tenders and boats, has completed the first two Galaxy 53m trimarans, made with Gurit SPRINT prepreg material moulded in glass and carbon composites and featuring Corecell M foam.

One of the two sister ships, Galaxy of Happiness, was open to the sailing and superyacht community to tour the boat at the 26th Monaco Yacht Show, the first international boat show, which took place from 28 September to 1 October.

Designed by Coste Design & Partners, Galaxy and Galaxy of Happiness were built in parallel at the Latitude yard in Riga, Latvia, in a record time of only 2.5 years. The yard covered all composite production, systems and engine installations, as well as interior and outer finishing. Launched in Riga, Latvia, in May 2016, the two trimarans can reach top speed of 30 knots.

Composites

The two, all-composite sister trimarans were built from Gurit SPRINT prepreg material moulded in glass and carbon composites and featuring Corecell M foam. Gurit Corecell aimed to provide a combination of high shear strength with low density, high elongation, high temperature resistance and low resin uptake.

“The material is the perfect choice in slamming area and has also been used in the superstructure, hull and multiple decks,” the company explains. For the secondary bonding, Gurit Ampreg 22 and Spabond 340LV were used.

Construction

Most of the parts of both trimarans were built in one piece at once, including the 53m long hull with engine foundations. During construction, Gurit, a leader in advanced composite engineering and materials, paid a number of on-site visits to support the manufacturing process and to discuss complex areas of the construction in more detail with the builders.

"Taking Gurit on board for the entire composite material package supply and process support was a perfect decision and very much helped us achieving such a great result. Gurit´s team was always there when needed and delivered beyond expectations,” commented Valdis Irbe, Chairman of the Board and CEO of Latitude Yachts.
