Solvay materials airborne on unique wing structure of MC-21 aircraft

Solvay’s resin infusion material technology was selected to manufacture the wing structures. Solvay has congratulated United Aircraft Corporation and AeroComposit on the first flight of the MC-21 aircraft. The MC-21 is the only single-aisle passenger plane with composite wing structures manufactured by AeroComposit with out-of-autoclave resin infusion technology.

Solvay’s resin infusion material technology was selected to manufacture the wing structures, which included dry carbon fibre slit tape PRISM TX 1100 and PRISM EP 2400 toughened resin.

“For Solvay, the choice of United Aircraft Corporation and AeroComposit to use out-of-autoclave carbon fibre composites to manufacture primary structure components such as wings, is a significant step in the wider adoption of these materials in large aircraft primary structures,” said Carmelo Lo Faro, President of Solvay’s Composite Materials Global Business Unit.

“Our unique technology improves the design and manufacturing efficiency of complex parts, offering cost benefits as well as critical advantages in lightweighting and fuel efficiency. We wish the MC-21 team success in the next stages.”

Solvay’s new Global Business Unit Composite Materials is a provider of technologically advanced lightweighting material solutions that enable our customers in the aerospace, automotive and other demanding industries to design, develop and efficiently manufacture high-quality, high-performance and complex composite structures.

Composite Materials has an extensive product portfolio, including prepregs, resin systems, adhesives and surfacing films, carbon fibre, textiles, tooling and vacuum bagging consumables, thanks to its leadership in advanced materials science, chemistry and application engineering. Solvay Composite Materials combines the former Cytec Aerospace Materials and Industrial Materials businesses.
