Full shielding with VeeloVEIL

General Nano, based in Cincinnati, Ohio, launched a new lightweight, flexible, electrically-conductive metallized nonwoven branded VeeloVEIL at the recent CAMX 2017 composites show held in Orlando, Florida.

It has been developed with aerospace and defence customers to meet the aerospace industry’s most stringent lightning strike protection and electromagnetic environment effects requirements in composite air vehicles.

The company’s current Veelo materials are based on carbon nanotube sheets and films for advanced lightning strike protection and EMI shielding and available in continuous rolls and prepregs for autoclave and out-of-autoclave processing. The company’s current Veelo materials are based on carbon nanotube sheets and films for advanced lightning strike protection and EMI shielding and available in continuous rolls and prepregs for autoclave and out-of-autoclave processing.

These multi-functional surface-ply materials are engineered to replace metals in carbon fibre composites and meet Zone 1A lightning strike protection (LSP) requirements  while delivering broadband shielding effectiveness and being highly drapeable and conformable to complex curvature parts.

The new nonwoven product adds further potential applications.

As the aerospace industry has transitioned from metal to composite air vehicles, the need for new electrically conductive, lightweight materials that deliver multifunctional value are easy to integrate, and improve upon existing composite manufacturing processes, has become prevalent for aerospace OEMs and their suppliers, the company says.

“We’ve been innovating for nearly four years with some of the world’s most respected aerospace companies to develop next generation conductive materials that support current and future aerospace platforms and missions,” says CEO and co-founder of General Nano, Joe Sprengard. “VeeloVEIL is the latest result of our ability to develop differentiating products.”

VeeloVEIL is said to deliver a new level of performance in metallized nonwoven technology for the composites industry, providing a unique combination of ultra-low resistivity, low areal weight, and ductility for composite parts with complex geometries. It is more than four times less resistive at equivalent areal weights compared to other metallized nonwoven products on the market, the company claimes.

General Nano was Boeing’s 2016 Supplier of the Year for Technology.
