Carbon Fiber Design Contest to focus on 3D printing at JEC World 2017

Carbon Fiber Design Contest is aimed to raise the interest in an innovative use of carbon fibre associated with the modern technology of additive manufacturing. The Carbon Fiber Design Contest 2016/17, an international competition, will take place during the JEC World 2017 trade show, which will be held from 14-16 March in Paris, France, located in the Better Living Innovation Planet.

At JEC World 2017, the Innovation Planets will serve as display areas dedicated to composite innovation and production, where every company working in the field of composites may present its latest innovations and showcase them through an artistic set design.

Now in its fifth edition, the Carbon Fiber Design Contest is aimed to raise the interest of creatives, designers and architects in an innovative use of carbon fibre associated with the modern technology of additive manufacturing, organisers explain.

The theme of this edition is Planning in colour with the largest 3D polychromatic and multi-material printer. “Creativity has an immediate feedback with realistic colours and materials, making obsolete the uncertainty of results,” organisers report.

Raising awareness

In 2013, a group of professionals operating in the area of composite materials has decided to organise an international competition dedicated to young creative to design objects made with carbon fibre. This was the beginning of the Carbon Fiber Design Contest, designed to raise awareness of architects, designers and creative in the carbon fibre, using and improving the typical properties of the material: mechanical strength, lightweight and mouldability.

The first edition had immediate international success with the participation of about 200 projects from all over Europe, 20,000 visitors on the web, thousands of contacts via facebook, and ended with the award ceremony during the International Salone del Mobile in Milan.

New technology

Since then, the Carbon Fiber Design Contest has continued to evolve, always touching different themes in the new technology. In 2014/2015, it has been focused on the use of composite materials in yacht design, in 2015/2016 the caption 3D Carbon Fiber Design Contest clarifies how 3D printing was chosen as a topic.

The 2017 edition, with the participation of Stratasys Gmbh as Industrial Sponsor, will focus on 3D printing technology. The jury will be chaired by one of the world's leading experts in 3D printing, Professor Marinella Levi, of the Politecnico di Milano. The award ceremony will take place in Milan at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile 2017.
